On a private island in Raa Atoll, Joali was conceived as an art-immersive resort where significant works by contemporary artists from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe are integrated into the architecture, landscape, and water villas as a permanent installation programme rather than as decorative addition. The 73 beach and over-water villas were designed with display opportunities and lighting conditions that allow the artworks to function as encountered experiences rather than lobby objects, and the curation process involves serious dialogue with the commissioning artists about the specific challenges and opportunities of a coral island setting. The atoll’s position in one of the Maldives’ less-visited northern groups means the surrounding reef and the water clarity have been subjected to comparatively limited pressure.

The dining programme at Joali spans three restaurants from the contemporary Maldivian-influenced Saoke to the Japanese-inspired Yume and a beach grill whose informality provides a counterpoint to the resort’s high aesthetic register. The spa’s treatment menu draws on Ayurvedic and traditional Asian wellness practices, and the resident marine biologist leads conservation snorkelling and diving programmes that engage guests directly with the reef monitoring work on which the island’s long-term ecological health depends. The art programme includes artist talks and studio visits when resident artists are working on the island.

Joali’s integration of contemporary art into a luxury resort context is not simply decorative: the programme engages with artists who are willing to make work specifically for a coral island, responding to the conditions of the atoll — the light, the water, the environmental vulnerability — rather than simply placing existing work in a new setting.
