On a hillside above the Costa Smeralda coastline near Arzachena in northeastern Sardinia, Cascioni Eco Retreat occupies a landscape of granite outcrops, Mediterranean maquis, and the juniper scrub that characterises the pre-development Sardinian interior before the Costa Smeralda’s transformation into one of Europe’s most expensive resort destinations. The retreat’s accommodation — a small number of stone-built suites integrated into the natural terrain — is designed to maintain the visual and ecological character of the Gallura landscape around it rather than to impose on it, with building materials drawn from the granite and timber of the surrounding countryside and an energy and water management system that minimises the property’s footprint on a landscape that has remained relatively uncommercialized compared to the coastal resorts a short distance to the east. The Costa Smeralda’s famous beaches, the archaeological sites of the Sardinian nuragic civilisation, and the village markets of the Gallura interior provide the cultural and recreational context for a stay.

The retreat’s wellness programme draws on the Sardinian herbal and botanical tradition — the mastic, lavender, mirto, and helichrysum of the macchia mediterranea — in a programme that treats the landscape’s sensory qualities as the primary therapeutic resource and that structures activities, meals, and treatments around the rhythms of the day, the light, and the seasons rather than around a fixed resort schedule. The kitchen’s menus draw on the Gallura culinary tradition of porceddu roast suckling pig, culurgiones pasta, pecorino sardo, and the artisan breads of the Gallura interior in a cooking programme of genuine regional specificity.

Cascioni’s environmental philosophy is expressed in its site design, its material choices, and its operational practices, all of which reflect a commitment to the Sardinian interior landscape that contrasts explicitly with the development model of the Costa Smeralda’s more intensive resort infrastructure.
