Kea Nature Retreat

On the island of Kea in the Cyclades’ western group, closest to the Attic coast, Kea Nature Retreat occupies a position in one of the least-visited of the main Cycladic islands, whose proximity to Athens (90 minutes by ferry from Lavrio) and deliberate absence of airports and cruise ship infrastructure have allowed it to maintain the agricultural character — the oak forest, the almond and olive terraces, the ancient Cycladic villages — that the more heavily visited islands have substantially lost. Walking trails through the oak forest to the Lion of Kea — the ancient archaic sculpture carved into the rock above the Ioulis valley — and to the remote beaches of the island’s indented coastline, kayaking along the sea caves of the northern shore, and excursions to the island’s Byzantine churches and Mycenaean archaeological sites provide the cultural and natural activity programme. The retreat’s menus draw on Kea’s own agricultural production — the thyme honey, the local olive oil, and the seasonal vegetables of the island’s few working farms — in a cooking programme that treats the island’s food culture as a form of cultural heritage requiring the same preservation attention as its archaeological monuments. The harbour village of Korissia provides access to the island’s traditional taverna and café culture.
