On the promontory above Lake Lucerne at Bürgenstock in Canton Nidwalden, Bürgenstock Hotels & Resort is a multi-property complex of four hotels, seventeen restaurants, and an Alpine Spa of extraordinary scale and architectural ambition, occupying a historic resort site that was transformed into its current form through a two-billion-franc renovation project completed in 2017. The site’s history as a private mountain resort dates to the 1870s, when Friederich Frey-Fürst began developing the Bürgenstock with the funicular, the cliff path, and the Hammetschwand Elevator — still Europe’s highest exterior elevator — that give the plateau its distinctive nineteenth-century resort infrastructure. The 383 rooms and suites across the four hotels range from the historic architecture of the Palace Hotel to the contemporary spa-adjacent design of the Forest Hotel, with the lake views and the mountain landscape constituting the resort’s most consistent luxury across all categories.

The Alpine Spa’s 10,000-square-metre complex includes an outdoor infinity pool cantilevered 500 metres above the lake, an extensive indoor pool and hydrotherapy circuit, a medical wellness clinic, and a fitness and movement studio whose mountain views are among the most dramatic available in Swiss wellness hospitality.
