On the Chobe River in Chobe National Park in northern Botswana, andBeyond Chobe Under Canvas is a mobile tented camp positioned on the river bank above one of Africa’s most productive wildlife corridors, where the Chobe River’s permanent water source draws enormous concentrations of elephant, buffalo, and the river-adapted species — the puku antelope, the water monitor lizard, and the Cape clawless otter — that give the Chobe waterfront its specific wildlife character distinct from the drier savannah ecosystems of the Savute and central Botswana. The eight tented suites are positioned as close as possible to the river bank, with the hippo and elephant visible from the sleeping platform at the hours when the river traffic is most active — the dawn hour when the large herds come to drink and the evening hour when the sunset light turns the river gold and the animal movement builds to its daily peak.

Boat game drives on the Chobe River — watching hundreds of elephants swimming between islands or drinking in long lines at the bank, the pods of hippo surfacing in the afternoon channels, and the kingfishers and bee-eaters of the riparian vegetation — provide a qualitatively different wildlife experience from the land-based safaris of the camp’s morning and evening drives in the national park. Walking safaris along the river bank, night drives in the concession, and the Chobe’s legendary sunset boat drives give the programme a completeness appropriate to one of Africa’s most wildlife-diverse river frontages. The outdoor kitchen’s cooking under the trees and the campfire at the river’s edge provide the social framework for each evening.
