On a private island in the Okavango Delta within the Nxabega concession in Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve area, andBeyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp occupies a position in one of the Delta’s most productively varied ecosystems, where the permanent papyrus channels of the deep Delta meet the seasonal floodplains and Mopane woodland that create the habitat mosaic on which the Okavango’s extraordinary wildlife diversity depends. The nine tented suites are positioned among the Jackalberry and Wild Fig trees of the island’s interior, elevated on wooden platforms above the flood level with decks that overlook the channel system and the floodplain beyond. The camp’s elevated position within the tree canopy provides views across the surrounding island landscape that ground-level camps in the Delta cannot offer.

The activity programme at Nxabega spans the full range of Delta experiences: morning mokoro excursions through the papyrus-edged channels, game drives on the seasonal floodplains where lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard concentrate around the water sources, night drives in the concession, and walking safaris in the Mopane woodland. The Delta’s seasonal flooding pattern — the annual pulse of Angolan rainfall that floods the Okavango system between June and August — brings an influx of wildlife to the floodplains as the water spreads and the grass that grows behind the receding flood draws enormous herds of grazing animals and the predators that follow them. The kitchen’s programme draws on Botswanan produce and the camp’s own kitchen garden.

andBeyond Nxabega’s conservation work within the concession includes active participation in the Okavango Research Institute’s long-term monitoring of the Delta’s water dynamics and the management of the island’s natural vegetation to maintain the habitat diversity that supports the camp’s wildlife population.
