Within the sand forest habitat of Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge is built among the canopy of a rare fever tree forest, a protected vegetation type found in very few locations in South Africa and nowhere with the combination of accessibility and wildlife density that Phinda offers. The 16 glass and teak suites are positioned above the forest floor on raised platforms, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls that dissolve the separation between interior and forest without sacrificing the climate control and comfort of the accommodation. The glass walls also allow nocturnal wildlife movement through the forest to be observed from bed, an unusually intimate experience in a conservation context.

Game drives cover Phinda’s full mosaic of habitats from the sand forest through wetland, bushveld, and mountain terrains, with the range of landscapes supporting species diversity — elephant, black rhino, cheetah, lion, leopard, buffalo, nyala — that makes the reserve one of the most productive in KwaZulu-Natal. Guided bush walks, night drives, and specialist tracker experiences are offered alongside the standard morning and evening game drives. Dining on the elevated deck above the forest floor creates a particular atmosphere that changes with the light through the day and with the acoustic landscape of the forest at different hours.

andBeyond Phinda’s conservation impact at Forest Lodge is felt through the health of the sand forest itself, a vulnerable ecosystem that the reserve’s management actively protects from bush encroachment and fire damage. The lodge’s design philosophy of glass and minimal footprint reflects a commitment to the forest’s visual and ecological integrity rather than simply using it as a backdrop.
