Within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve adjacent to the western boundary of the Kruger National Park in South Africa’s Greater Kruger ecosystem, andBeyond Tengile River Lodge is the group’s most recent addition to the Sabi Sand, opened in 2020 on the Sand River as a ten-suite lodge of architectural ambition — a design by Nicholas Plewman Architects that positions the suites on elevated platforms above the river with views across the water to the riverine forest and the open bush beyond, providing a quality of landscape immersion that the Sabi Sand’s combination of exceptional leopard density and dramatic riverine ecology makes uniquely possible. The open vehicle access to the Sand River’s wildlife-rich corridor and the Sabi Sand Reserve’s traversal rights within Kruger give the game experience at Tengile a scope unusual in a private reserve of this size.

Game drives in the Sabi Sand focus on the leopard, which uses the riverine vegetation as cover and the river crossings as ambush positions, alongside the lion prides, elephant herds, and the complete Big Five that the ecosystem sustains at densities unmatched in publicly accessible areas of the same habitat type. Walking safaris with the lodge’s senior rangers, night drives, and specialist tracking sessions with the lodge’s tracker team — some of whom have built their reading of the bush across decades of experience in the Sand River ecosystem — give guests multiple entry points into the reserve’s wildlife experience. The spa’s treatment programme and the outdoor pool above the river provide a quality of residential comfort appropriate to a lodge of this standard.

andBeyond Tengile River Lodge’s conservation contribution to the Sabi Sand Reserve and the broader Kruger ecosystem is channelled through the andBeyond Africa Foundation’s anti-poaching, community enterprise, and environmental education programmes that have been operating in this landscape for three decades, giving the foundation’s work at Tengile a depth of institutional knowledge and community relationship that newer conservation lodges in the ecosystem have not yet developed.
