On the Cry d’Er ski run above Crans-Montana in the Valais canton of Switzerland at 2,112 metres, Chetzeron occupies a converted cable-car station — the former summit building of the Cry d’Er gondola, expanded into a hotel of 14 rooms and suites whose position at the top of the main Crans-Montana ski domain gives it ski-in ski-out access from the first run of the morning and views across the Rhône Valley to the Bernese Alps that, on clear winter days, include the profiles of the Matterhorn and the Weisshorn among the Valais peaks visible to the south. The building’s industrial origin — the cable car machinery has been retained as a design feature — gives the interiors a technical character that distinguishes Chetzeron from the conventional alpine luxury chalet aesthetic, and the exposed concrete and steel of the conversion’s structure combine with the handmade Swiss alpine furnishings to create spaces of particular atmospheric honesty in a mountain resort context that often prioritises nostalgic cosiness over material integrity.

The restaurant’s menus draw on the Valais culinary heritage — the raclette from mountain cheese makers, the viande séchée cured meat of the Hérens valley, the Heida and Petite Arvine wines of the high-altitude Valais vineyards, and the game of the alpine hunting season — in a setting whose panoramic windows and outdoor terrace positioning give dining at Chetzeron the quality of a meal at the highest point of the alpine landscape available from this resort. The spa’s treatment programme uses alpine botanicals and the cold and heat contrast therapy of Swiss mountain medicine. The Crans-Montana ski area’s connection to the Aminona sector and the resort’s golf landscape in summer provide the seasonal activity framework.

Chetzeron’s adaptation of the cable-car infrastructure as the basis for a hotel both celebrates and challenges the industrial history of alpine tourism, using the machinery of mountain access as design material rather than hiding it behind the decoration of a more conventional ski hotel approach.
