Occupying a private island in the Mitsio Archipelago off Madagascar’s northwest coast, Constance Tsarabanjina is among the most isolated luxury properties in the Indian Ocean, accessible by seaplane or speedboat from Nosy Be. The island’s 37 beach villas are the only structures on its eight kilometres of palm-fringed shoreline, with guests sharing the island with its resident population of lemurs, tropical birds, and the marine life of one of the least-disturbed coral reef systems in the region. The surrounding waters have seen minimal fishing pressure and the reefs retain a density of fish and coral that is increasingly rare across the Indian Ocean.

Days unfold entirely according to the rhythms of the island, with snorkelling, diving, fishing, and kayaking from the beach, and guided exploration of the interior forest where ring-tailed and brown lemurs move through the coastal scrub. Dining takes place in a single open-sided restaurant serving Malagasy seafood and Creole-inspired cuisine, with ingredients drawn from the ocean and from producers on the Malagasy mainland. The spa uses natural botanical preparations connected to the traditional healing practices of the Mitsio communities.

Tsarabanjina’s location within a relatively intact marine ecosystem carries genuine conservation significance, and the resort’s management works in partnership with local fishing communities and environmental organisations to maintain the protected status of the surrounding waters. The island’s remoteness is not simply an amenity to be marketed but a condition of its ecological integrity, and the guest experience is built around that relationship with a landscape that functions because it has been protected rather than simply admired.
