On a remote coral island in the Amirantes group, approximately 230 kilometres southwest of Mahé, Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island is accessible only by charter flight and represents one of the most genuinely isolated luxury properties in the Indian Ocean. The island’s 20 villas and suites are arranged along the shoreline of a lagoon of unusual clarity, the reef surrounding Desroches supporting a marine environment that has experienced comparatively limited disturbance. The island is long and narrow, traversed by bicycle paths that allow guests to move through coconut palm groves from one beach to the next in complete privacy.

Days are shaped by the reef, the lagoon, and the island’s own pace: diving and snorkelling along the outer reef wall, kayaking the sheltered inner lagoon, and cycling to the lighthouse at the island’s western tip. The restaurant sources ingredients from the island’s own garden and from suppliers on the Malagasy coast and Mahé, serving Creole-influenced cuisine in an open-sided setting overlooking the lagoon. The spa uses locally gathered botanicals and marine products in treatments developed for the particular rhythm of island life.

Desroches Island’s remoteness is not incidental but fundamental to the experience. The island’s ecosystem, including healthy coral formations, resident sea turtles, and a colony of fruit bats in the interior palms, is maintained through the resort’s conservation partnership with the Island Conservation Society, which monitors nesting turtles and reef health as an integrated part of the island’s management. The lack of mobile signal and the minimal light pollution at night give Desroches a quality of stillness that is increasingly rare in the Indian Ocean.
