Within the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve of central Belize’s Maya Mountains, GAÏA Riverlodge occupies a position on the Privassion River in a landscape of primary subtropical forest, granite boulders, and the extraordinary birding that makes the Maya Mountains one of the most productive ornithological territories in Central America. The 20 rooms and suites are designed in a comfortable lodge aesthetic with outdoor living areas that take advantage of the river’s presence and the forest’s sensory richness, with the gurgling rapids and the surrounding cicada chorus providing the acoustic landscape that distinguishes river-gorge accommodation from jungle lodges set away from the water. The Mountain Pine Ridge’s position above the Belize coastal plain gives it a cooler climate and clearer air than the tropical lowlands, with early morning mist and evening cool that make outdoor activities comfortable throughout the day.

Guided birding in the Mountain Pine Ridge forest, swimming in the natural granite pools of the Privassion River, visits to the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave system whose Maya archaeological contents — ceramics, skeletal remains, and the calcified artifacts of ceremonial deposit — constitute one of the most significant and least-disturbed Maya sacred sites in Central America, and hiking to the Hidden Valley waterfall whose 1,000-foot drop is among the highest in Central America provide the primary activity programme.
