Above the Puerto Angelito bay at Puerto Escondido on the Oaxacan Pacific coast, Hotel Terrestre is a boutique property whose design — by the Mexican architect Alberto Kalach — represents one of the more radical statements of resort architecture in contemporary Mexico, with structures of volcanic stone and exposed concrete that appear to grow from the rocky headland above the bay rather than to have been placed on it, and a relationship with the Pacific coast landscape that is more geological than horticultural. The 14 rooms and suites are positioned along the clifftop, with outdoor bathing areas, hammocks above the void, and the Pacific’s horizon as the defining visual element of each accommodation. The hotel’s commitment to natural ventilation and the specific qualities of the Oaxacan coast’s seasonal breezes shapes the building’s spatial decisions as much as its aesthetic preferences.

The restaurant’s menus draw on the Oaxacan culinary tradition with the same seriousness that the architectural programme applies to the building’s relationship with its landscape — specifically the coastal Zapotec culinary culture of the Oaxacan Pacific, with its distinctive approach to fish preparations, mole verde made from the local herb and chile variety, and the mezcal distilled from the agave species endemic to the coastal sierra. The Puerto Escondido surf break, the lagoon birdwatching at Manialtepec where crocodiles, roseate spoonbills, and mangrove birds inhabit the coastal wetland, and the mezcal tour programme into the Oaxacan sierra are among the activities the hotel’s concierge team arranges. The cultural life of Oaxaca city — the Monte Albán ruins, the textile markets, the contemporary art scene of the city’s galleries — is accessible by a short flight inland.

Hotel Terrestre occupies a specific position in the Mexican boutique hotel landscape as a property whose design ambition is as defining as its location — an architecture that has earned attention from critics and design publications worldwide while remaining entirely rooted in the specific conditions of the Oaxacan Pacific coast.
