On the Son Tra Peninsula north of Da Nang on Vietnam’s central coast, InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort occupies a hillside position of extraordinary visual drama — a jungle-covered peninsula whose forested slopes descend to the South China Sea below, with the resort’s buildings and pools cascading down the hillside in tiers that give each level a different perspective on the sea and the surrounding forest. The 197 rooms and suites were designed by Bill Bensley in his most ambitious Vietnamese project, with a narrative that transforms the resort into a journey through five spiritual realms: Arrival, Forest, Hilltop, Beach, and Infinity — each with a distinct architectural character, material palette, and relationship with the natural landscape of the peninsula’s particular terrain. The result is a resort of considerable visual complexity and theatrical ambition set against a backdrop of primary coastal forest whose biodiversity, including rare forest birds and the occasional appearance of the red-shanked douc langur, gives the natural context a conservation significance that the theatrical design concept productively amplifies.

The HARNN Heritage Spa’s treatment programme draws on Vietnamese botanical traditions and the peninsula’s specific highland forest resources in a wellness setting whose suspended treatment rooms above the tree canopy provide one of Southeast Asia’s more dramatically positioned spa environments. Dining at La Maison 1888, overseen by three-Michelin-starred chef Pierre Gagnaire, brings the French culinary tradition’s highest expression to a Vietnamese coastal setting of unequalled scenic drama. The beach below the resort and the coral reef accessible by boat from the private pier provide water-based activities complementary to the peninsula’s land-based wildlife and forest experiences.

InterContinental Danang’s conservation engagement with the Son Tra Peninsula’s forest — a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve candidate — includes active support for the douc langur conservation programme and the management of the resort’s building footprint to minimise disturbance to the forest habitat that gives the peninsula its exceptional environmental character.
