La Posta Vecchia

On the Tyrrhenian coast at Palo Laziale, 40 kilometres northwest of Rome, La Posta Vecchia occupies a seventeenth-century villa originally built for Prince Palo Orsini on the ruins of a Roman villa discovered during the villa’s conversion and now preserved in a museum beneath the building’s stone foundations. The 19 rooms and suites of the villa, extended by John Paul Getty Sr. during his ownership in the 1960s and 70s, retain the specific character of an Italian aristocratic coastal residence — the ceiling frescoes, the antique furniture and Flemish paintings, the marble floors — combined with the precision of a luxury hotel operation that maintains these historic elements without allowing them to deteriorate into museum condition. The private beach below the villa and the terraced gardens above it are among the more secluded coastal settings in Lazio.

The restaurant’s seafood menus draw on the Tyrrhenian coast’s fishing tradition — the mazzancolle prawns, the rombo and branzino of the Latian coast, and the wild clams and sea urchin of the inshore reefs — prepared with the sensibility of a kitchen that has been refining the relationship between Roman coastal cooking and fine dining standards across the hotel’s decades of operation. The Roman archaeological museum below the building, containing the mosaics, frescoes, and objects discovered during the villa’s excavation, provides an unusually direct encounter with the history of coastal Latum in the first and second centuries AD. The drive to Rome along the Via Aurelia passes through Civitavecchia and the Etruscan coastal landscape of the Lazio maremma.
