Okahirongo Elephant Lodge

On the Purros Conservancy in the Kunene Region of northwestern Namibia within the range of one of Africa’s most famous desert elephant populations, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge occupies a position on the Hoarusib River where elephant, desert-adapted giraffe, lion, and the brown hyena coexist within a landscape managed by the surrounding Himba and Damara communities under a communal conservancy model that has become one of Namibia’s most celebrated conservation success stories. The 9 suites are designed in a style that draws on the river valley’s earthy colour palette and the organic forms of the Kunene’s rocky landscape, with private plunge pools on each suite’s deck oriented to the dry river course that the elephants use as a highway between their desert water sources. The lodge’s position on private land within the conservancy gives it direct access to the elephants’ movements without the vehicle congestion of better-known wildlife destinations.

Activities focus on the desert elephants as the primary wildlife subject, with game drives and guided walks designed to observe the elephants’ extraordinary adaptive behaviours in their desert context — their ability to detect subsurface water, their extended daily movement patterns, and the social structures they maintain despite the dispersal that desert life requires. Cultural visits to the Himba communities adjacent to the conservancy, guided by community members rather than external interpreters, provide a window into one of Africa’s last semi-nomadic pastoral cultures, whose cattle-based economy and ochre-based aesthetic traditions have maintained their coherence despite considerable external pressure.

Okahirongo’s revenue distribution model, which channels a portion of lodge income directly to the Purros Conservancy, has contributed to the conservancy’s ability to protect the elephant population from poaching and to maintain the community land management practices that have restored the Hoarusib valley ecosystem from its degraded condition two decades ago.
