Origins Lodge

Near the Tenorio Volcano at the edge of the Tenorio National Park in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, Origins Lodge occupies a private forest concession adjacent to the turquoise waters of Río Celeste, one of the most visually remarkable rivers in Central America, whose extraordinary blue-white colour results from the meeting of two rivers whose chemical composition produces a precipitation reaction at the confluence that colours the water downstream. The 14 rooms are designed in a lodge aesthetic of natural wood and stone, with the forest of the Tenorio concession providing a primary rainforest environment accessible directly from the accommodation’s garden borders. Wildlife in the surrounding forest includes tapir, jaguar, puma, and the full range of Costa Rican primates and birds.

Guided walks to Río Celeste waterfall and the volcanic confluence are the primary activity, with naturalist guides explaining the chemistry and biology of the coloured river as part of a broader interpretation of the Tenorio volcanic system. Night walks in the primary forest, birdwatching in the cloud forest above the lodge, and horseback rides through the agricultural landscape at the park boundary give guests a fuller picture of the Tenorio region’s ecological diversity. Dining draws on the traditional cooking of the northern lowlands, with organic produce from the lodge’s own garden supplemented by sourcing from local farming communities.

Origins Lodge’s conservation model includes a reforestation programme on previously cleared agricultural land adjacent to the forest concession, with native tree planting aimed at extending the wildlife corridor between Tenorio National Park and the remaining forest patches to the north. The lodge’s minimal scale and its position within a working conservation landscape give guests a direct sense of the environmental work on which the quality of the Río Celeste experience ultimately depends.
