Silky Oaks Lodge

On the edge of the Daintree Rainforest in tropical northern Queensland, above the Mossman River gorge, Silky Oaks Lodge occupies a position in the most ancient living rainforest on earth — the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area, whose lineage extends over 135 million years to the period when Australia was still connected to Gondwana. The 50 treehouse suites and villas are built on stilts above the forest floor or cantilevered over the Mossman River, with open-air bathrooms, hammocks above the river, and a design that keeps the accommodation in genuine physical contact with the rainforest rather than simply adjacent to it. The sounds of the rainforest — the cassowary calls at dawn, the constant insect chorus, the river current — are the primary sensory experience of a stay here.

The Healing Waters Spa draws on the traditional healing practices of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people, whose country encompasses the Daintree Rainforest and who have contributed to the spa’s botanical programme through the knowledge of medicinal plants specific to this environment. The restaurant’s menu engages seriously with Queensland’s tropical produce — the macadamia nuts, pawpaws, native finger limes, and reef fish of the Coral Sea just west of the lodge — and the guided canoe tours of the Mossman River and Great Barrier Reef snorkelling excursions are among the most frequently arranged activities. Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef, is an hour’s drive north.

Silky Oaks Lodge’s partnership with the Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners, formalised through a co-management arrangement for the surrounding national park land, reflects the Australian luxury hospitality sector’s increasing engagement with Indigenous land management knowledge as both a cultural and an ecological asset rather than simply as a component of visitor programming.
