The Brando

On Tetiaroa, a private atoll 53 kilometres north of Tahiti in French Polynesia, The Brando is the realisation of a vision conceived by Marlon Brando — who acquired the atoll following his appearance in Mutiny on the Bounty in 1962 — to create an ecologically sustainable luxury resort on one of the last private atolls in the Pacific. The 35 villas are distributed across Onetahi, the largest of the atoll’s thirteen motu, within a landscape of coconut palms, nesting seabirds, and the extraordinary clarity of the Polynesian lagoon that has made Tetiaroa one of the Pacific’s most photographed natural environments. Brando’s original vision of a research station and conservation area has been partially realised through the Tetiaroa Society’s ongoing scientific work, which studies the atoll’s ecology and contributes to the broader understanding of Pacific coral atoll systems.

The dining programme at The Brando draws on the extraordinary seafood of the Polynesian lagoon and the organic produce grown on the atoll’s own farm, with the French Polynesian culinary tradition — the poisson cru, the coconut preparations, and the Tahitian vanilla and noni fruit — providing the flavour language of menus that are otherwise international in their culinary scope. Snorkelling and diving in the atoll lagoon and on the outer reef, paddleboarding across the turquoise shallows, and birdwatching in the nesting colonies of the uninhabited motu — where frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, and coconut crabs are undisturbed — provide the primary natural experiences. The research station’s scientists are occasionally available for guest interactions.

The Brando’s commitment to ecological sustainability extends to 100% solar energy generation, a seawater air conditioning system that uses cold deep-ocean water pumped from 915 metres below the surface, and a waste management programme that has made the atoll plastic-free. These are not recent additions to the resort’s operating model but original commitments that reflect Brando’s instruction that the atoll’s ecology was to be protected rather than compromised by the resort’s operations.
