Wilderness Bisate lodge

Adjacent to on the forested volcanic slopes of the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s Kinigi sector, Wilderness Bisate Lodge occupies a hillside position among restored native highland forest at 2,600 metres, with views across the volcanic summits of the Virunga chain and the agricultural patchwork of the surrounding valley below. The six pod-shaped lodge structures — designed in reference to the traditional Rwandan royal palace form of the intore — are built into the hillside with grass-turfed roofs, curved cedar walls, and large windows oriented towards the volcanic forest where the mountain gorilla families tracked from this lodge begin their day. The lodge’s altitude, its endemic bird population, and the misty atmosphere of the Virunga rainforest give it a distinctive physical character quite different from the savannah safari lodges of East Africa’s plains.

Mountain gorilla trekking from Bisate uses Rwanda’s permit system to give guests a daily hour with habituated gorilla families in the park’s volcanic forest, and the tracking itself — sometimes requiring significant climbing through bamboo and nettle in the morning mist — provides a physical engagement with the Virunga landscape that gives the eventual encounter with the gorillas a quality of earned intimacy different from more easily accessible wildlife sightings. The golden monkey tracking programme and the forest walks with Bisate’s naturalist guides provide additional wildlife experiences in the park’s complex ecosystem. The cultural programme includes visits to the adjacent community’s traditional craft producers and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s research operations.

Wilderness Bisate’s most distinctive conservation contribution is the forest restoration programme that has planted over 30,000 native Afromontane trees on the previously degraded agricultural land surrounding the lodge, effectively extending the Volcanoes National Park’s habitat buffer zone and creating a transition forest that benefits both the gorilla population and the bird species of the Virunga highlands. This active habitat restoration, funded by lodge revenues, is the most tangible and visible conservation achievement directly attributable to Bisate’s operation.
